Why the term laptop is not being used anymore

Many people do not know the difference between a notebook and a laptop. Technically when it comes to notebook vs laptop, size and weight seem to give clear differences between these two. Size and weight of a laptop or notebook generally impacts the features of either system. Today, however, there are little differences between laptops and notebooks since technology has been advancing at a rapid rate. This means that the common computer peripherals and devices are becoming smaller in size and weight. Therefore, size and weight may not give clear differences between laptops and notebooks since both laptops and notebooks can come with common features found in desktop computers.

For example, when the UltraLite Notebook was released in 1989 by NEC, it was considered a portable PC at that time and many people termed it as the first ever notebook computer. This notebook computer came with two megabyte of solid state memory storage, a ROM, RAM, CPU, an RS-232C port and a built-in modem. The notebook computer weighed five pounds. During the same time frame, many laptops were released and a good example is the Compaq SLT/286. This laptop came with a CPU, hard drive, memory, VGA display, floppy drive and weighed around 12-14 pounds. The thickness of this laptop was around three times that of the notebooks that were released in that time frame.

Because many people are not seeing any difference between notebook and laptop, many of them are of the opinion that the term 'laptop' is being phased out slowly. But is this true? It is worth mentioning that due to advancement in technology and the need for mobile computing, computer systems are now becoming slimmer and smaller. This also means that the size of a typical portable computer, both in weight and thickness, is decreasing. Therefore, the term laptop is used less frequently. By calling laptops notebooks, this removes any association that a portable device is designed to be used on a person's lap only. Laptops are heavier and this has been their tradition.

As such, the term laptop may not fit in with advancement in today's technology where devices are becoming lighter and smaller in size. In fact, heavier portable devices that were once known as laptops are not being manufactured anymore. As far as notebook vs laptop is concerned, it is becoming very common to hear consumers calling their notebooks laptops and they use these words interchangeably. Nevertheless, mobile computing companies are now not using the term laptop when making their devices and now call their devices notebooks. For example, HP now has a selection of various "Performance Notebooks" which range in size and weight. They also have "Balanced Mobility Notebooks that also range in size and weight.
